Face and Body Oils: How to Lock in Moisture and Support Your Skin Barrier

Face and body oils are often misunderstood.

For years, many people avoided them because they worried oils would leave their skin feeling greasy, heavy or uncomfortable. I completely understand that. Nobody wants to feel as though they have been lightly basted before leaving the bathroom.

But when a face and body oil is blended well, it can feel very different.

The right blend should soften the skin, help lock in moisture and leave you feeling nourished rather than coated. Used after a shower, bath or your usual skincare routine, a few drops of oil can help seal in comfort and give the skin that soft, cared for feeling many of us are looking for.

At Ita’s Natural Essentials, our face and body oils have become some of our most loved products. Our Rosehip blend remains one of our biggest sellers, and the newer Rhubarb fragrance has been selling out almost as quickly as I can make it.

That tells me something interesting.

People are not only looking for skincare that works. They are also looking for skincare that feels good to use. Scent, mood, nourishment and comfort all matter. A product can be practical and still feel like a tiny moment of pleasure in the day.

A More Modern Way to Think About Face and Body Oils

Face and body oils are best thought of as a finishing layer.

They are not there to replace every step in your skincare routine. They are there to help soften the skin, support the skin barrier and help lock in the moisture you have already added.

If your skin is very dry, apply your usual hydrating product first, then use a few drops of oil as the final step.

If your skin is oily or blemish prone, start slowly. Choose lighter oils, use a tiny amount and see how your skin responds.

The best oil is not the trendiest one.

It is the one your skin actually likes.

Why Oils Can Be So Helpful

The outer layer of our skin works like a protective barrier. When that barrier is happy, skin tends to feel softer, calmer and more comfortable.

When it is struggling, skin can feel dry, tight, flaky, dull or unsettled.

Well chosen plant oils are rich in fatty acids and naturally occurring compounds that can help condition the outer layer of the skin. They can be especially useful when skin feels dry, weather exposed, tired or in need of a little extra care.

They also bring a sensory element that creams alone do not always have.

The way an oil glides over warm skin after a bath or shower.
The way a beautiful scent can shift your mood.
The way a few drops can turn a rushed routine into a small act of care.

That matters too.

Why Scent Matters

For a long time, natural skincare was often expected to smell only of essential oils or nothing at all.

Essential oils can be beautiful, and I use them carefully in many products. But not every scent experience has to come only from essential oils.

More and more customers are looking for variety. They want oils and creams that feel nourishing but also smell beautiful, comforting or uplifting. Sometimes they want a soft botanical scent. Sometimes they want something fruitier, warmer or more playful.

That is why blends like Rosehip continue to be loved, and why Rhubarb has become such a favourite.

Scent can be linked to mood, memory and ritual.

A body oil is not just “skin food”. It can become the scent you reach for after a shower, before bed, after a long day, or when you want to feel a little more like yourself again.

The important thing is that fragrance should be used thoughtfully and safely, whether it comes from essential oils or carefully selected cosmetic fragrance.

For sensitive skin, less is often more. Patch testing is always sensible, especially if you know your skin can be reactive.

Rosehip Oil: Lightweight, Beautiful and Loved for a Reason

Rosehip oil is one of my favourite oils, and it is a key reason our Rosehip blend is so loved.

It has a naturally lightweight feel and is often described as a dry oil because it sinks in beautifully without leaving skin feeling overly greasy.

Rosehip oil is rich in essential fatty acids and naturally occurring antioxidant compounds, including carotenoids. It is often loved by people with mature, dry, dull or tired looking skin because it helps the skin feel soft, supple and cared for.

Personally, I often prefer rosehip oil to stronger retinoid style products because it feels gentler on my skin.

It is not the same as retinol or prescription retinoids, and I would never pretend it is. But for people who prefer a softer, oil based approach, rosehip can be a beautiful ingredient to include in a regular skincare routine.

Squalane: Silky, Stable and Skin Softening

Squalane is another beautiful ingredient for face and body oils.

It is lightweight, silky and usually very well tolerated. It helps soften the skin and support that comfortable, supple feeling many of us want from an oil.

Squalane is related to squalene, a lipid naturally found in human sebum. In skincare, squalane is often used because it is more stable and better suited to cosmetic formulations.

At Ita’s Natural Essentials, we use plant derived squalane.

That matters to me. Historically, squalene has sometimes been sourced from shark liver oil as well as plants. Today, many ethical skincare brands choose plant derived options from sources such as olive, sugarcane or rice bran.

For me, plant derived squalane fits beautifully with the kind of skincare I want to make: effective, thoughtful and kind to the skin without unnecessary compromise.

Black Seed Oil: Rich, Traditional and Best Used Thoughtfully

Black seed oil comes from Nigella sativa and has a long history of traditional use.

It is naturally rich in fatty acids and bioactive compounds, and it is often chosen for skin that feels dry, unsettled or easily irritated.

It has a richer, more distinctive character than some lighter oils, so it needs to be used thoughtfully. It is not always right for everyone, and that is why formulation matters.

As with any active botanical ingredient, patch testing is sensible, especially if your skin is very sensitive or reactive.

Do You Need Separate Face and Body Oils?

Not always.

I have never really seen the point of making skincare more complicated than it needs to be.

A well formulated oil can often be used on both face and body, depending on the blend, the scent level and your individual skin.

That is why I love creating oils that feel luxurious enough for the face but generous enough for the body.

Skincare does not have to be fussy to feel special.

How to Use Face and Body Oil

For the body, the best time to apply oil is just after a shower or bath.

Pat the skin lightly so it is still slightly damp, then warm a few drops of oil between your palms and massage into the skin. This helps lock in that post shower moisture and leaves the skin feeling soft and nourished.

For the face, use oil as the final step in your routine.

Cleanse first.
Apply any hydrating mist, serum or moisturiser.
Then press a few drops of oil gently over the skin to seal everything in.

If your skin is oily or blemish prone, use less than you think you need. One or two drops may be enough.

If your skin is dry, mature or weather exposed, you may prefer a little more, especially in winter.

Your skin is allowed to change. Hormones, seasons, stress, heating, cold weather and age can all affect how your skin feels. The trick is to notice, adjust and not panic.

Ancient Wisdom, Modern Formulation

Plant oils have been used in beauty rituals for centuries, but modern skincare gives us a more thoughtful way to use them.

We no longer need to rely on folklore alone. We can look at fatty acid profiles, skin feel, absorbency, stability, safety and how each oil works within a finished blend.

That is where the magic happens for me.

Not just one trendy oil.

A considered blend.

Something that feels good, smells beautiful, supports the skin barrier and makes people want to use it again and again.

That is why I love making face and body oils.

They are simple, but not basic.

They are nourishing, but not heavy.

They can be practical, mood lifting, comforting and a little bit indulgent all at once.

A Fun Little Skin Fact

Sebum is the natural oil produced by the skin’s sebaceous glands. It helps protect the skin and contributes to that natural dewy look.

The word sebum comes from Latin and is linked to tallow or grease, which is perhaps not the most glamorous origin story.

But it does remind us of something useful.

Oil is not the enemy of skin.

The right oils, used well, can be part of a balanced, beautiful and very skin friendly routine.

Final Thoughts

Face and body oils are not miracle cures. They do not need to be.

What they can be is something much more useful.

A way to soften dry skin.
A way to support the skin barrier.
A way to lock in moisture.
A way to add scent, mood and comfort to your daily routine.
A way to make skincare feel less like a chore and more like care.

And sometimes, that is exactly what our skin and our mood need.
